Mountain View might not have a bunch of stars, but it is clear the Toros have plenty of wrestlers willing to battle.

And in this sport that type of mentality can take a team a long way.

Mountain View showed that on Friday on the first day of the Division I, Section III sectional tournament as the Toros are in first place against a star-studded field.

Mountain View advanced seven into Saturday's 10 a.m. semifinals at Desert Vista and has five more left in the consolation. It added up to 91 team points with Horizon (85) second and Desert Vista (80.5) third while Mountain Pointe is 12th in the 15-team event.

The Toros top wrestler is returning state champion Seth Monty but other than that they sport a lineup of blue collar, hard workers. It might be why Mountain View has been viewed all year as a squad just outside the top tier of teams.

And yet with the postseason underway Mountain View appears ready to battle.

"We have a good team but maybe not the big names other than Seth," Toros coach Bob Callison said. "We're battling. Hopefully, we scrap and get some finalists and even more placers. If we can finish strong we can set ourselves up for state."

The Thunder's difficult season continued as three of their better wrestlers were missing from the lineup. Desert Vista still managed to advance seven to the semifinals and have three alive in the consolation.

Sophomore state qualifier Matt Mathers (113, upper respiratory), senior state champ Kendall Love (126, ankle) and senior state placer Mike Arredondo (220, undisclosed injury) all had their season come to an end by not entering the tournament.

"Looking at the silver lining Sunnyside won it last year with four finalists and not much else," Desert Vista coach David Gonzalez said. "If we take care of business the rest of the weekend we can still make a run at it."

The Pride has at least one wrestler in the semifinals in Cody Rojas (113).

The finals are scheduled to begin around 2 p.m.
