MESA - The net had a hole on the right side and Desert Vista sophomore Tassie Saunders found it.
Literally.
Desert Vista beat Mesa Mountain View 2-1 on Monday in the first game of the Dobson Mustang Classic when Saunders scored on the right side of the goal. The ball went under the net and hit the back fence so observers weren't sure if it was good or not.
But then the Thunder (5-2-2) players started celebrating to give it away.
The goal by Saunders came shortly after the Toros tied it at 1 when Desert Vista goalie Nicole Kagasoff was beaten on a free kick.
After that Desert Vista had several opportunities as it appeared to step up the pace before Saunders got the game winner.
"We became interested," Thunder coach Paul Manoogian said with a hint of sarcasm.
The Thunder took the first half lead on a goal from sophomore Kelly Watson.
The tournament runs through Thursday with Desert Vista continuing action on Tuesday against Dobson at Red Mountain Park at 9 a.m.
