DV, MP volley teaming up to raise breast cancer awareness

There will be a major amount of pink in Desert Vista's gym on Oct. 23.

DV volleyball is teaming up with Mountain Pointe to host Dig Pink in ‘Tukee, where the two schools will use their volleyball match as a way to raise awareness for breast cancer.

"We all know someone who's affected by breast cancer," said DV coach Molly West.

As part of Dig Pink -- a national event in October in which more than 250 teams across the United States have already signed up to participate -- the teams will wear pink jerseys, use a pink ball and encourage fans to wear pink.

"The vision is to walk into the gym and we'll have a pink ball, pink jerseys, pink fans and all just for that cause," West said. "I'm really excited about it."

Donations are already being accepted in order to help the schools reach their goal of $3,000, said Kim LaFountain, a member of the Desert Vista booster club.

Individuals wishing to donate can visit ThunderVolleyball.com and navigate to the link, or visit www.sideoutvolleyball.org/mainevent/minievent/DV-MP.

The Side-Out Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit. Donations can be written off; the company's tax ID is 20-251-0044.

Each school will also sell raffle tickets beginning in September, and the teams are also searching for companies to sponsor the event.

For more information, contact LaFountain at klafountain@cox.net.

"At first, we were like, ‘It's kind of a big match, do we want to have something distracting in there?'" West said. "And then we were like, ‘You know, it's bigger and better than that,' and so we're going to do it. We're hoping it's going to be big."
