PONY Baseball: Mustang Red manager passing on love of baseball

As a baseball fan Rod Lovell just can't get enough of the game.

Maybe that's why he's been coaching young players in four beginner leagues for the past five years.

"I'm just a super baseball fan," Lovell admits.

He got his son, James, started in a Phoenix T-ball league five years ago.

"He was immediately obsessed with baseball," Lovell said. "He loves to play and he loves to watch."

During the first T-ball season Lovell was asked to help out as an assistant coach.

"It just went on from there," Lovell added. "We both have a love for the game and it's a great thing that we can do together."

This season Lovell is coaching the PONY League Mustang Red 9- and 10-year-olds.

He has also coached at the PONY Pinto level and a Little League farm before retuning to the PONY Mustang division.

"It's been three years since I did Little League," Lovell said. "There are some differences, but overall the level of play has been good and it's still baseball."

Healthcare reform
In a final push for a sweeping healthcare overhaul, President Barack Obama urged a simple "up-or-down" vote on the legislation. What would your vote be?
Up! Let's get this thing passed already!
The proposals look good on paper, but I'm still hesitant about its execution.
Down. It's time to go back to the drawing board.
