A.L.L. baseball: Majors manager finds himself in unique role

Jake Dominy has turned a heartbreaking situation into an uplifting one.

Dominy, the manager of the Ahwatukee Little League Majors All-Stars, watched this year as his son, Kyle, fractured his femur and tore his ACL midway through the season.

Kyle had been an all-star on A.L.L.'s 10- and 11-year-old teams the past two seasons, but the injuries ended his season and he isn't on the roster this season.

"After he got hurt," Dominy said, "Kyle kind of talked to me and said, ‘Do you want to do it, Dad? Go coach them, you'll do a good job.'

"It's time away from your family," Dominy added, "but I just love working with the kids."

And though it's an opportunity lost to coach Kyle on the all-star team, Jake Dominy realizes it puts him in a unique opportunity that most other Little League managers don't often find themselves in.

"Nobody can say that I'm playing my kid over somebody else," he said. "It takes that out of the equation. You know certain kids better than others, but for me, my kid's not playing, so that's out of play. That makes it a little easier."
