It was a long time in between handshakes for Basha wrestling coach Mike Garcia and senior Christian Stadler.

They are making up for lost time these days as Stadler keeps walking off the mat deserving of a handshake at the very least as evidence of his easy rumble through the first three rounds of the McClintock Invitational.

Stadler is a normally a takedown machine but showed off his pinning prowess Friday as he was on the mat a total of 1 minute and 59 seconds with three pins of 1:09, 21 seconds and 29 seconds. The last one came against Desert Mountain’s CJ Lae and moved Stadler into Saturday’s 9 a.m. semifinals against Campo Verde’s Steve Stryker, who is 23-0 on the year.

Stadler’s inclusion in Basha’s lineup was a longtime coming as he first met Garcia at an open house before his freshman year, but the family ended up moving to Colorado where he missed qualifying for state by one match on last year for Durango High.

The family moved back to Arizona last summer and he has fit in like he never left.

“He spent the summer with us and jumped right into it,” Garcia said. “He is a real hard worker. He is real confident on his feet and he’s pretty strong.”

Stadler has company in the semifinals as Ryan Kuhn (120) and Trey Ronayne (182) both made it to the semis for the Bears as the top seed.

While team standings were not available Sunnyside should have a distant lead with eight individuals in the semifinals and that is without top seed Gabriel Gonzalez at 196 who was disqualified by injury default in a first-round match against Combs’ Joey Salas.

Next up are Chandler and Marcos de Niza with five semifinalists each with Red Mountain with four.

Mountain Pointe state qualifier Cody Rojas (121) is the lone Ahwatukee wrestler to make it through to the semis as he will take on undefeated Daniel Ramirez of Red Mountain.

The Pride, who lost 170-pounder Austin Reyher to a broken arm, are young and first-year coach Darrick Kahle has seen the progress he wants in the first month.

“We are working hard,” he said. “We are going back to the basics and drilling the same moves over and over again. It is something we have to do to make progress. Once we get everything in place then we can start building toward something bigger.”
