The Kofa team bus pulled into the Mountain Pointe parking lot around 3 p.m. Friday afternoon.

The players and coaches got out and stretched, took in the lovely fall day and made the most of their three-and-half-hour trip to the Phoenix area from Yuma.

The Kings probably won’t be planning a return trip any time soon.

The Pride won in a blowout, 70-0, as the running clock was put in place in the second quarter. From there it was a matter of everyone staying healthy and finding playing time for the sparsely used players on Senior Night.

“We got here earlier than expected and took some time to relax outside,” Kofa coach Kevin Moore said. “There was no relaxing once we started. They are loaded with size and speed. We were overwhelmed. We talked all week about the kids competing. We did a little better job of that in the second half.”

Of course, by then, the Pride (7-1) had emptied the bench to allow seniors such as safety Connor Arendts, offensive lineman Max Phillips, cornerback Dillon Schirato and linebacker Rene Fernandez to play a good portion of the second half.

“It was Senior Night, and everybody played,” Pride coach Norris Vaughan said. “We executed pretty good and we looked good on both sides of the ball. Obviously they have some challenges, but we did what we had to do.”

Before the mass substitution, the Pride did pretty much whatever they wanted.

At halftime, Mountain Pointe led 49-0 and had 342 yards from scrimmage. Kofa had one first down and zero yards from scrimmage.

Junior quarterback Antonio Hinojosa -- who finished 11 of 14 for 224 yards -- threw five touchdown passes, including two to Jalen Brown (six catches 121 yards) in the first quarter to break the school record for touchdowns in a season with 18, which knocked Kyle Faunce’s mark of 16 in 2010 out of the record book.

The Pride finished with 237 yards rushing and 228 yards passing, while Kofa finished with 13 total yards (27 carries for 13 yards, 0 for 6 passing).

Defensively, senior safety Jimmy Holtrop had two interceptions to make sure Kofa (1-7) didn’t answer any of Mountain Pointe’s early scores.

“It was great to do that on Senior Night,” Holtrop said. “We knew if we got up on them early, we could get some other guys who come to practice every day a lot of playing time.”
