The Mountain Pointe baseball team has probably seen enough of Brophy until May.

Despite a two-out, three-run rally in the seventh inning, the Pride lost for the third time this season to the Broncos in a 7-6 defeat on Wednesday in the final day of pool play at the Big League Dugout tournament.

“We need to play our game,” said Bryce Redaja, who has three home runs, including a three-run shot in the seventh, in the tournament. “We haven’t played our style of ball against them.”

Brophy is 3-0 in the tournament and plays Thursday at 9:30 at Horizon, while Mountain Pointe fell to 2-1. Tie breakers will determine whether or not the Pride would get another game as the wildcard semifinalist.

The Pride led 2-0 early when Ernie de la Trinidad led off the game with a triple while Redaja and Jake Alexander had RBI singles off Bronco starter Michael Westra.

It looked like it might hold up with the way starter Ryan Sheehan was pitching, but the fourth inning changed the game.

The Pride was unable to capitalize on the first two batters reaching base, when a base running mistake cost them a run after a sacrifice bunt.

The mistake was compounded in the bottom half of the inning when the defense got generous with Tommy Martinez on the mound. There was a fielding error by the second baseman and later an overthrow of home by the left fielder as the Broncos plated four for a 5-2 lead. Drew Dohogne and Steven Oleksak had RBIs for Brophy.

“When you don’t make pitches and give them six outs it hurts,” Pride coach Brandon Buck said. “We are going to make mistakes like that, but we have to correct them. We played well early on but had a bad inning.”

Brophy eventually pushed it out to 7-2 as Charlie Coppola had a RBI double..

The Broncos (8-6) started slow but Westra settled in to go five innings and the bats came alive.

“We’ve played them three times now and they’ve been good ballgames,” Brophy coach Tom Succow said. “We’ve played well and battled. We swung the bats well today and Westra was strong after that first inning.”
