The Desert Vista soccer programs were able to sweep Mountain Pointe on Tuesday evening as the Thunder won two different type of matches.

At Mountain Pointe, the Thunder boys built a 3-0 halftime lead and that’s the way it ended. Desert Vista (1-0) scored early and often and rode out the clock the rest of the way.

At Desert Vista, the Thunder girls had close to 10 shots on goal – with at least three hitting the cross bar – if not more but couldn’t get anything to cross the threshold.

Then in the second 10-minute overtime session, just 2 minutes and 51 seconds away from a shootout – Lauren Owens cross shot from the right side bent high and past the Pride goal for the 1-0 lead and eventual win.

“Rachel (Ressler) cleared and I stopped it with my left foot and got a shot off with the right,” Owens said. “It felt so good. We had so many opportunities but couldn’t get it to go in. We stayed focused and kept pushing it ahead.”

Desert Vista coach Marvin Hypolite said the players did a good job of staying focused when the frustration could have built up after each groan from the home crowd as the ball just missed giving the Thunder a lead time and time again.

“This was the first game and we got some of the rough edges smoothed out,” Hypolite said. “They kept at it and we kept pushing until we finally got one.”

The Pride (0-2) played their second match after losing to Xavier to open the season and it was clear the game advantage allowed them to keep the game close when it probably shouldn’t have been based on time spent in the goal area.

“We had our spacing down and we played good defense,” Pride coach Mark Wilson said. “Our problem is going to be scoring. We don’t have that difference maker when we need something to happen. It was only a matter of time before they scored, but we played good on defense all night.”
