The Seagulls must have been unstoppable.

Any Pop Warner team that has Hamilton senior and Notre Dame recruit Cole Luke and highly-sought after Mountain Pointe junior Jalen Brown had to be hard to contain.

“We had some good players that’s for sure,” Brown said. “It was a lot of fun.”

The two were teammates in the early portions of their career and now they facing each other in the Division I state championship game and had a little bit of interaction on Tuesday at Wolfley’s Neighborhood Grill as the Arizona Interscholastic Association held press conferences heading into this weekend state football championships.

“It adds a little something off the field, but it doesn’t mean anything once the game starts,” said Brown, who has set school records for catches, yards and touchdowns for a season and career this season. “We were buddies and hung out and we will be after the game, but we are competitors first.”

Luke had the same sentiments knowing he is going up against one the state’s top recruits.

“It doesn’t matter how many offers he has or highly recruited he is,” Luke said. “I look at him as a regular receiver because you have to and I will do what I do every week.”

The matchup will be one of the better individual duels during the Division I state title game on Saturday.

Both are athletic playmakers, who at the same time, are leaders of their unit.

Brown plays both ways and is counted on heavily on both sides of the ball, whereas Luke is more of a defensive player who gets a few touches on offense.

Chances are one way or another they will cross each other's path.

"We've played against each other before," Brown said. "There's a little more at stake this time, but we've know what to expect."

That Seagulls team in 2008 also had, among others: Tevin Mayfield (CDS - RB); Aaron Green (DV - FB/LB); Greg Carter (DV - QB); Aaron Modi (DV-DE); Josh Aberle (McC - DB); Matt Bailey (Basha - DB/QB) . . . they were a fun team to watch - super fast and physical!!
