It was well worth the trip for the Mountain Pointe boys basketball team.

The Pride, the 19th seed, knocked off No. 14 Oro Valley Ironwood Ridge 53-47 in the first-round of the Division I state tournament on Thursday.

Mountain Pointe (15-12) travels to take on third-seeded Red Mountain on Saturday at 7 p.m.

The Pride came into the game having lost three straight and four of six against top competition and that level of play prepared them for the postseason and probably had a hand in beating Ironwood Ridge (19-10).

"We played a good defensive ball game," Mountain Pointe coach Brian Fleming said in a voicemail. "We hit some big shots in the third and fourth quarter to get the win."

The Pride was led by junior Khari Holloway's 18 points, while sophomore Jalen Brown had 13 and Austin Witherill added nine.
