The Horizon Honors boys basketball team is one step closer to a 20-win season.
The Eagles beat Bourgade Catholic 62-48 at home Saturday to push their record to 18-6 and more importantly rid their system of Friday's disappointing 81-54 loss to Gilbert Christian.
"This was a good win but we have to start beating the top teams," senior point guard Dominick Chavez said. "It was tough (losing to Gilbert Christian), but we have some time to get ready for the postseason."
Horizon Honors led 46-34 after three quarters, but Bourgade Catholic closed within 46-39 when Kebrab Mehari hit a 3-pointer with 5:28 remaining.
Eagles coach Ernest Shand called a timeout and Horizon Honors went on a 10-0 over the next 2 minutes and 19 seconds to put the win away.
And then it was cemented when Tyler Popescu threw down an alley oop from Chavez in the final minutes.
"Those two have been playing together for years waiting for a play like that," Shand said. "Even I let a little fist pump go after that one."
The Eagles were led by Taylor Hudzinski with 19 points, while Jake Connell backed him with 12 and Popescu added nine.
