Sectional basketball: MP advances, DV upset

The first day of Division I sectional basketball is in the books at Desert Mountain.

Second-seeded Mountain Pointe is still alive, while third-seeded Desert Vista has a lot of time off before the state tournament starts next week.

The Pride squeaked by No. 7 Boulder Creek 61-58 in overtime on Tuesday, but the Thunder fell 61-57 to No. 6 Marcos de Niza.

Caitlyn Hetrick scored on an out of bounds play with 7.2 seconds left to put the Pride up one and then scored another lay up at the buzzer to make the final margin  Kaylah Lupoe scored 18 points before fouling out.

The loss by DV prevented a third meeting between the Ahwatukee rivals in Thursday's Division I, Section III semifinals.

The Pride will play Marcos at 5:45 at Chaparral with the winner advancing to the finals. The other semifinal is No. 1 Pinnacle and No. 4 Xavier.

The title game is at 5:45 on Saturday at Chaparral.

Desert Vista's Kristine Anigwe received two technical fouls in the game and was ejected so the 6-foot-4 sophomore will have to sit out of the Thunder's first round game at state.
