With both lineups missing key components after a bruising weekend, the Desert Vista and Corona del Sol dual meet lost some of its luster Wednesday before it started.

With dual meets meaning little in the big pictures both coaches - Desert Vista's David Gonzalez and Corona's Jim Martinez - showed some restraint and kept out four starters each for various reasons.

The results regardless of the lineups went Corona's way as the Aztecs won 45-20 by taking seven of the 12 matches wrestled as both teams received one forfeit each.

"We were both missing guys and they sent out the same extra guys and they came out wrestling," Gonzalez said. "Their kids stayed off their backs and we didn't."

The Thunder were missing Matt Mathers (113) and Robbie Mathers (132) due to illness, Kendall Love (126) had weight issues and Robert Sobarzo (138) had a skin irritation.

The Aztecs were without Jay Tucker (195), Ethan Tursini (145), Daniel Cartagena (138) and Riley Rayburn (120).

The one featured match that did happen came at 152 between Desert Vista's Derek Allen and Corona's Jason Landrum with the latter coming away with a 6-4 win.

Landrum set the pace from the start by getting the initial takedown, but trailed 3-2 after one when Allen executed an outside single at the buzzer.

It was 5-4 Landrum after two when the Corona senior escaped to start the period and then hit a slick drop-down duck under.

There was little action in the final period as Landrum escaped to start the final two minutes to end the scoring. He fended off any attack Allen attempted.

"I've seen him in a couple of different (practice) rooms but we never wrestled," Landrum said. "He's strong and it will give me confidence if I see him again."

Martinez said the win showed Landrum what he could do when he competes for a full six minutes against tough competition.

"We impressed on him that if he doesn't stop wrestling he is going to find a way to win," Martinez said. "Derek gave him an opportunity to be in the match and he took advantage of it."

One of the matches that swung the Corona's way unexpectedly came at 145 when reserve Colton Winstead pinned Thunder state qualifier Cooper Gardner.

Gardner built a 9-1 lead late in the third period but got caught and was pinned with 1 minute and 3 seconds remaining.

"You have to wrestle smart," Gonzalez said. "You have to wrestle those matches (with a big lead) smart. You have to win the match first and then go for the pin."

Martinez said the experience learned from competing against some quality teams at The Clash in Minnesota will bring dividends by the end of the year.

"What we watched was the mat strategy, the focus and intensity for an entire six minutes and it is something we need to build upon in our wrestling room," he said. "We came away knowing a lot matches are not over until the final second on the clock expires. If there is time on the clock you can go out and keep working them."
