Baseball: MP, DV to face off as region foes for final time
Comments 0 | Recommend 0A baseball era will come to a close Wednesday afternoon.
After an 11-year rivalry, Mountain Pointe and Desert Vista will face each other for the final time in region play on the baseball diamond at Mountain Pointe.
Next season, and for at least the following one, Desert Vista will remain in the Central Region with Brophy, Chandler, Chandler Hamilton, Mesa and Mesa Red Mountain.
Mountain Pointe moves over to the new Pima Region with Casa Grande, Marcos de Niza, Chandler Perry and Mesa Desert Ridge, Skyline and Westwood.
It was a rare season when Desert Vista or Mountain Pointe dominated the other in the regular season and just as rare when one team would sweep the other in the regular season, three-game home-and-home series.
Desert Vista has a 2-0 edge over the Pride going into the regular season finale.
The last time one school swept the other was two years ago when Mountain Pointe won all three games then lost to Desert Vista in the double-elimination playoffs.
This season Desert Vista is the third seed among the state's top 16 teams that qualify for a playoff spot while Mountain Pointe is hoping for a win over the Thunder and a miracle to help move them up from the 19th spot and at least a position near the bubble.
Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
