MP's Cron drafted by White Sox but will attend Utah
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Mountain Pointe graduate C.J. Cron, one of the most feared hitters in Class 5A-Division I baseball this past season, was selected in last week's MLB First Year Player Draft by the Chicago White Sox. But instead of signing, Cron will head to the University of Utah to play baseball, his father, Chris, said earlier this week.
Cron, a catcher, has until August 15th to change his mind, "but odds are - very good odds - that he'll be attending Utah on a baseball scholarship and not signing," Chris Cron said.
The White Sox picked Cron with the eighth selection in the 44th round, or No. 1,320 overall.
"It's always an exciting time when you think you might get drafted, and he was, it just wasn't what we were looking for," Chris Cron said. "That's fine. He's looking forward to (playing at Utah)."
Cron hit .421 with eight home runs and 35 RBIs this past season. He also served as the Pride's closer in the later portion of the season.
Cron holds school records for doubles, RBIs and least strikeouts in a season.
