The thermometer read 106 degrees.

Mountain Pointe’s gold helmet, white jerseys and maroon pants were a stark contrast to North High School’s blue jersey and white helmets and pants.

But not as stark as the difference between the two programs.

By the end of the night, most of the jerseys and pants have lost their pristine look. And after 48 minutes of football, the Pride emerged the victors by a score of 64-0.

It was over early on as Mountain Pointe came out strong, scoring touchdowns on all three of their first quarter possessions. The Pride never faced a third down and scored on every drive.

With 60-yard touchdown passes and those on the ground from 30-plus, it was no contest, as the Pride seemed to be on cruise control.

Quarterback Garvin Alston went 5 for 6 for 158 yards in the first half, and running back Brandyn Leonard rushed for 86 yards on four carries.

Mountain Pointe head coach Norris Vaughan said his team played as well as he expected.

“ I thought we played awfully well. Our quarterback played well, the receivers made catches. It was a good effort all around,“ Vaughn said.

By the time the game was over, the North amassed only 30 yards. The offense never crossed over to the Pride side of the field. But Vaughn said his players could have been sharper.

“We substituted kickers, snappers, holders, everybody, but I think though our focus could have been better. We weren’t playing a great team and I think they knew that.”
