Volleyball is a game of adjustments and Mountain Pointe’s Jared Ahern made a big one this season.

The junior has moved from libero to an outside hitter for the Pride’s boys volleyball team this season.

“The whole mental mindset is different,” Ahern said. “Instead of staying back, I have to get up to the ball now. Both positions are fun, but I feel like I need to get better.”

Playing as a sophomore last season helped.

“The first year I played I was kind of nervous, but I’m more into it now,” he said.

Ahern was introduced to volleyball by his older brother, Jordan, who also played libero for the Pride and as a senior was on the Pride’s first of two consecutive state championship teams in 2008.

Now Jordan is a volleyball official.

“But obviously he can referee our games,” Ahern said.

Mountain Pointe has won seven state boys volleyball titles, and Jared was a member of the team that earned the title last season.

“I had played baseball for a long time,” Ahern said. “But my brother convinced me to try volleyball when I was in the eighth grade. I started playing volleyball, and I loved it.”

Ahern has ascended to the team captain role this season.

Mountain Pointe coach Fred Mann calls Ahern the team’s emotional leader.

Besides rotating on the court, there is a constant cycle of players graduating and coming in from the junior varsity to stir up the team chemistry.

“It takes a little while to figure out where we’re supposed to play and get used to it,” Ahern said. “We’re getting there.”

Mountain Pointe had a 7-2 record going into the spring break this season.
