Derek Allen made a brief, but important appearance.

The Desert Vista senior had been frustrated all season while waiting to be cleared by the school's athletic department after his former school, Mountain Ridge, alleged illegal contact.

Allen was cleared to wrestle shortly before Wednesday's tri-meet at Mesquite and promptly took those frustrations out on his opponents with two pins at 152 in a total time of 1:52 against the Wildcats and Hamilton.

"It felt food to get out there finally," said Allen, who has accepted an appointment to attend West Point.

The Thunder dispatched the two opponents almost as easily as Allen did as Desert Vista beat Mesquite 53-12 and Hamilton 54-20. Hamilton defeated Mesquite 45-27 to start the day.

One of the best matches of the night came at 220 when the Thunder's Alex Bambic pinned Hamilton state qualifier Alex Burgoyne in 4:15.

The match was scoreless after two periods before Bambic, a defending state champion, escaped to start the third period. After setting the tempo of the match to no avail, Bambic went from a head-and-arm to an outside ankle and took Burgoyne all the way to his back for the pin.

"I was waiting him out," said Bambic, who will drop to 195 for Moon Valley next weekend. "He wasn't doing much so I had to wait for an opening."

Another quality match also came in the Hamilton-Desert Vista match as the Thunder's defending state champion Kendall Love defeated freshman Estevan Ulibarri, 9-3, at 132.

Ulibarri showed a lot of promise, making Love work for his two takedowns but he also gave up a penalty point because of three cautions.

"He's strong and he is going to be good," Love said.

One of the better meetings between the Thunder and Mesquite came at 106 as the Thunder's Brian Mitchell defeated the Wildcats' Alex Wimbish 6-2 after it was tied at 2 after the first period.

Mitchell chose down to start the second and high-legged over for a reversal before securing the win with two back points in the third on a power half off the cross-body ride.

The Thunder remained undefeated as they get closer to getting its real lineup out there - sophomore 113-pounder Matt Mathers and heavyweight Mike Arredondo didn't wrestle - with Allen getting his first matches of the year.

"He got to knock some rust off and get out of the practice room," Thunder coach David Gonzalez said. "It was important to get him some matches before Moon Valley."

Hamilton heavyweight and all-state football player Jaxon Hood was in a walking boot. He was injured during football season - it was misdiagnosed as plantar fasciitis - and is getting a MRI done this week.
