Jacob Matanky knew it might be his last chance.

And he wasn’t going to let it slip by.

The Mountain Pointe 152-pound senior had never defeated a Desert Vista opponent in his career. So when he entered the third period against the Thunder’s Dominic Williams on Wednesday night trailing 1-0 he dug a little deeper.

He started the third period in the down position and it looked like Williams was going to ride out Matanky for the win, but was the former was called for a second stalling with eight seconds left to tie the match at 1.

On the restart, Matanky hit a stand up, sheered inside to square off and sprawled when Williams took a shot. Matanky was awarded the escape at the buzzer for the 2-1 victory.

“I was tired but I had to find a way,” he said. “Desert Vista always kills us and we needed something to get us going because it was happening again. It felt great to get that win.”

It was one of two bright spots for the Pride in the dual meet that Desert Vista won 68-9 as Michael Santa Cruz picked up the only other win as he get a pin over Christian Bambic in 2 minutes and 27 seconds at 195.

“He’s just a freshman,” Pride coach Darrick Kahle said. “That was pretty impressive.”

The Thunder dominated the rest of the way as they had five pins, four forfeits, two technical falls and a major decision. Desert Vista also beat Brophy 55-21 to improve to finish the season 7-1 in dual meets.

The Thunder and Pride are done with competition until the Division I, Section I sectional tournament at Ironwood Ridge on Sept. 8 to determine who makes the state tournament the following weekend in Prescott Valley.

“We did some good things and now we can work on things and fine tune until sectionals,” Desert Vista coach David Gonzalez said.
