With just over a month left in the spring regular season in most sports, it is time to take a look at where local teams stand with hopes of making the postseason.

Once again the Ahwatukee area looks to be well represented.

Here is a look at where they will stand.

Desert Vista: The Thunder entered the week at No. 6 in Division I with a 7-0 record in region games before a three-game week that finishes up with a game at Mountain Pointe. Desert Vista is getting some big time pitching from Tyler Viza and Sean McGuire while Aaron Modi (.373, 15 RBIs), Colby Woodmansee (5 HR, 16 RBIs) and Cullen Bottock (.404, 15 runs) are having good offensive years.

“It’s been a little bit of everything,” Thunder coach Stan Luketich said. “We’ve pitched well, played good defense overall and we are starting to hit the ball better.

“We’ve had a lot of situations where we’ve been behind and come back. It has helped us a lot. We’ve done a good job of putting an extra run or two on the board when we’ve had a lead.”

Mountain Pointe: The Pride was at No. 22 in Division I with a 4-2 record before this week’s three games. Mountain Pointe played well in the Big League dugout tournament but haven’t been able to solve Brophy (0-3 overall) so far. Jake Alexander and Cole Tucker lead the offense while Zach Cordova has been a true ace.

Horizon Honors: The Eagles were 4-2 but just No. 37 in Division III so it is clear they need to continue their winning ways. Junior Jake Connell (.609, 12 runs, 11 RBIs) is doing his part along with Owen Fite while senior Sean Broderick (0.60 ERA in three appearances) has been tough on the mound.

Desert Vista: The Thunder began the week at 3-2 and at No. 23 in the rankings. DV has four games this week and should move up quite a bit with some good results. The offense hasn’t been as good as expected so if the Thunder can start getting the team batting average of .259 to get closer to .300 or higher the wins will come in bunches.

Mountain Pointe: The Pride lost its first power ranking game of the season Monday to sit at No. 13 in Division I with a 6-1 record. Sophomore catcher Hannah Hoban (.347, 17 RBIs) and pitcher Kristen McCann (7-4, 2.28 ERA) have led the way.

Horizon Honors: A 2-5 start has the Eagles in trouble at No. 48 in Division III. The pitching staff and defense has combined to allow at least nine runs every game and as many as 20 runs in six different games.

Boys tennis

Desert Vista: The Thunder entered Wednesday’s action against Chandler with four straight defeats and were ranked No. 23. Things need to turn around quickly to make the 16-team field.

Mountain Pointe: The Pride’s in an even more difficult spot at No. 32 with a 2-4 record. With only five more matches after this week’s action, the postseason run better start now.

Girls tennis

Desert Vista: The Thunder, No. 14 at 4-2, had a big match on Wednesday against Corona del Sol as it hopes to continue the winning ways. After losing its first two matches of the season, DV entered this week with four straight wins.

Mountain Pointe: The Pride sat at No. 20 with a 4-5 mark to start the week, needing to beat Dobson this week, and probably have to win three of its last four matches to have a chance of getting into the tournament.

Boys volleyball

Desert Vista: The Thunder has a back-loaded schedule as it begins the week having only played four matches. It helps when you win all of them to sit No. 6 in Division I. The action picks up this week with four matches, including a match at Hamilton on Friday.

Mountain Pointe: The Pride began the week with a 5-3 record and No. 23 seeding. It had some winnable matches this week before the schedule gets tougher down the stretch.
