The Desert Vista put everything on the table and showed plenty of aces early.

Desert Vista High won in three games against Xavier College Preparatory on Thursday yet each was very competitive with an electrified Xavier crowd and solid showing of Desert Vista fans.

The Thunder won it 25-18, 25-20 and 25-21.

In the first game Desert Vista (4-0) came out very strong with a 6-1 lead. After the Gators (3-1) called a quick time out they came back with two points.

The momentum did not last them through the game and the Thunder went up 16-8. Kirstyn Sperry of the Thunder ended the game with a kill.

The second game started out evenly with the score 3-3 until Hailey Harward hit a cross-court kill that distanced the Thunder from the Gators. Later in the game, Desert Vista continued to make big plays with Harward and Vanessa Wesley having consecutive blocks.

The game was far from over and the Gators came back to make it a close game at 21-18. An intense rally ended when the Thunder's Matisse Monty tipped it over the net to give momentum back the Desert Vista and was put away with a Wesley kill.

The third game was extremely close and the point differential never exceeded three until the end. After a timeout Desert Vista's Harward opened the action with a monstrous kill straight down the middle.

In a post game interview Coach Lamar-Renee Bryant from Xavier said, “We didn’t bring our ‘A’ game tonight.” Bryant went on to say the team needed to work on their confidence going forward in the season.

Coach Molly West of the Thunder said she was proud that the team, “Worked through some funky, discombobulated plays.” Moving forward West said the team needed to, “pick up our decision making and our speed.”

Hailey Harward of the Thunder credited the team’s win to good passing, blocking and competitiveness. “We were fired up,” Harward said.

Vanessa Wesley said the highlight of the game was when Harward got the big kill down the middle. Wesley cited the team’s energy as a key to success. “It was our fire our energy,” she said.

Covert is a sophomore journalism major at Arizona State. He is an intern for the AFN this semester.
