The Desert Vista boys basketball team likes to send in waves of reserves, but this was more like a tsunami.

The Thunder bench sparked an 18-0 run to start the second quarter and No. 5 Desert Vista cruised to an 83-49 win over visiting Mountain Pointe in a Division I game on Thursday night.

Kyle Pitman, John Marshall and Connor MacDougal led the onslaught, as the Thunder turned a 20-19 deficit late in the first quarter into a 41-24 halftime lead and were never threatened.

Pitman finished with 17 points and MacDougal had 16 points and 11 rebounds, eight of which came on the offensive glass.

“That’s my next year’s class,” Desert Vista coach Dave Williams said. “They’re tough.”

Desert Vista (19-7) used 12 players in the first two quarters and played 13 by the end of the third.

Danny Powell led the team with 24 points and added nine rebounds. Steven Klein had 15 points, and while Jeff Lowery shot poorly, he had a team-high six assists.

“We’re finally getting to the point where we don’t care who scores, we just want the victory,” Desert Vista coach Dave Williams said.

The game was entertaining for a quarter, as the teams traded buckets early on. However, Desert Vista’s second unit dominated and the Thunder ran away with the win.

“We can really mix our guys and we trust everybody to do their job,” MacDougal said. “This game, we were really able to accomplish that.”

MacDougal was particularly effective, pulling off the double-double despite playing only about half the game.

“He’s a beast,” Williams said.

It was the final game of the season for Desert Vista, which is fighting for one of the top-8 power point spots to earn a first-round playoff bye.

“We’re turning the corner at the right time,” Williams said. “Hopefully we can take this energy into sectionals, and then from sectionals into state.”

Mountain Pointe plays Gilbert on Friday to wrap up its season. The Pride were 16th in the power points entering the game.

Austin Witherill led the team with 20 points.
