Tucson Ironwood Ridge boys volleyball coach Bill Lang knew the score before his team made the trek Monday to Mountain Pointe for the first round of the Class 5A state tournament.

"Let's face it, Mountain Pointe isn't a No. 8 seed, more like a Final Four team," he said. "And as young we as are we probably more like a 10 or 12 seed. But that's what the power points give us."

And therefore the Pride made quick work of No. 9 Ironwood Ridge with a 25-8, 25-21 and 25-18 win as Mountain Pointe put the pressure on from the start.

In Game 1, the Pride jumped out to an 8-2 lead, pushed it to 15-3 and behind the serving of Saxson Richardson eased into a 22-4 lead.

"When are playing like that, serving, passing and receiving the ball we are a different team," Pride senior Connor McCook said. "When we are loose and having fun we are hard to beat."

Game 2 saw Ironwood Ridge grab a 7-4 lead, but Mountain Pointe tied it at 11 before building leads of 18-15 and 22-18 to gain control.

Game 3 was much of the same the Pride led 11-9 before pulling away to advance to Wednesday's second round as Mountain Pointe travels to top-seeded Tucson Salpointe Catholic.

The Lancers hosted the Pride last week and won in three sets. All of the games were close, including 25-23 win that Mountain Pointe led 22-16 but let get away.

"We will be ready to battle," Mountain Pointe coach Fred Mann said. "We didn't play our best match (in the loss to Salpointe), but now we get a second shot."

Desert Vista also advanced to the second round as the Thunder, the 12th seed, knocked off No. 5 Anthem Boulder Creek, 25-21, 22-25, 25-19, 22-25, 18-16.

They will host round the second round game as No. 13 Chandler pulled off an upset as well, knocking off fourth-seeded and defending state champion Glendale Deer Valley, 25-17, 25-12, 25-23.
