The Desert Vista girls tennis team has been the strongest area program all year so it is only fitting that the Thunder girls are the ones to have anyone left in the individual state tournament.

Fifth-seeded Melissa Kahn knocked off Mountain Pointe’s ViAnn Pham 6-1, 6-1 on Saturday at Scottsdale Ranch.

Teammates Yolena Carlon and Tori Kammerzel are still alive in the quarterfinals as well after beating Pinnacle’s Catherine Lontz and Sarah Moskowitz, 6-2, 6-0.

The second-seeded combo from Desert Vista advances to face No. 7 Lena Sweiss and Savanah Koss of Xavier on May 2 at Paseo Racquet Center.

Kahn will take on fourth-seeded Chloe Weihs of Chaparral on the same day.

The Desert Vista duo of sophomore Yusef Saleem and freshman Aditya Bollam lost in the third round of action as the Ryan Headley and Michael Headley of Pinnacle won 7-6, 6-0.
