Three area teams qualify for state basketball tournaments

The Arizona Interscholastic Association released the state tournament brackets for the basketball on Sunday and three area teams made the field.

The Desert Vista boys earned the 15th seed in the Division I tournament and will host No. 18 Chandler on Thursday at 7 p.m. The Thunder (16-11) beat Chandler 67-57 on Feb. 5. The winner travels toNo. 2 Dobson on Saturday.

In the Division I girls tournament, Mountain Pointe (20-9) and Desert Vista (26-2) earned first-round byes as the fourth and fifth seed, respectively, and will host a home game on Friday.

The Pride, who finished second in the super sectional after losing to Mesquite on Saturday night, will play the winner of No. 13 Pinnacle-No. 20 Valley Vista. The Thunder await the winner of No. 12 Horizon-No. 21 Ironwood.

If both area teams win they will play each other at Wells Fargo Arena on Tuesday, Feb. 25 with the winner advancing to the Elite Eight.
