As thick dark clouds rolled in over Chaparral High School and a light drizzle started to fall, it seemed like Mother Nature stole some of Desert Vista’s thunder.

Desert Vista battled Brophy for the state's lacrosse club team title on Friday night at Chaparral High. Although both teams are known for packing plenty of offensive firepower, the Broncos won a close 6-5 defensive battle.

Brophy (17-0-1) controlled the ball through much of the first quarter and both teams played stingy defense as the Broncos led only 1-0 after one quarter of play.

Brophy would score two goals in the second quarter, which would be matched by attackers Stephen Votto and Shane McLaughlin.

“At halftime I was pretty shocked it was 3-2,” coach Dan Lannon said. “Both teams are stacked well defensively. Our goalie played really well, David Wieneke, he played great and they got a good goalie, too.”

The second half was just as close as the first. The Thunder’s top two scorers, attackers Anthony Abbadessa and McLaughlin, managed only one goal apiece.

Brophy managed to contain the edges of the field and forced Desert Vista (15-2-1) to play differently than they normally do.

“I kind of always expect them to do something different,” Abbadessa said. “They always try to play us in a weird way, get us uncomfortable.

“They started locking off the wings, trying keep the ball from getting up top.”

When the final horn sounded, an explosion of sticks and gloves and helmets flew off the Brophy players, the Broncos’ celebration left Abbadessa feeling queasy and motivated for next year.

“I think next year we need to come back twice as hard.” Abbadessa said. “Watching them celebrate, there’s a knot in my stomach and it’s affecting me.”
