The Ahwatukee Foothills News and American Family Insurance agent Jay Gandee have formed a partnership to begin an Athlete of the Month award for both boys and girls.

One male and female will be selected based on nominations received from the three area schools.

The winners will receive a sign for their yard or window recognizing their achievement and a trophy, both supplied by Gandee.

Gandee, whose office is located at 10201 S. 51st St., wanted to get involved because he feels it is important to get the word out about high-achieving people.

“I get excited about other people’s success,” he said. “The more people know about it the better. It doesn’t matter what it is in, academics, music, business, athletics, I love the success story in all facets of life. This happens to be from an athletic standpoint.

“These young men and women deserve to be rewarded for the hard work, sacrifices and athletic achievements.”

Nominations can be sent to jskoda@ahwatukee.com and/or JGANDEE@amfam.com.

The initial two winners will be announced the first week of October based performances in September. Gandee will present the trophy and sign at the school and they will be recognized in the AFN.
