The Mountain Pointe girls basketball season ended Tuesday night in Sierra Vista.

The Pride, the 10th seed, trailed early against seventh-seeded Buena and never recovered in a 56-50 loss in the first round of the Class 5A Division I state postseason.

Buena (22-6) led by 12 in the first quarter and pushed it 16 in the second half. Mountain Pointe (21-6) closed within three, but never recovered.

Mountain Pointe, which had several turnovers, was led by senior Nikki Villescaz's 12-point effort and was backed by freshman Maddy Sulka's 11. Karyn Lupoe added nine points.

"We overcame a lot all season with a young team and people playing out of position," Mountain Pointe coach Trevor Neider said by cell phone. "All 14 girls on varsity missed at least one game or more with injuries or being sick. We are young and we will learn from this year and be even stronger next year."

These players aren't even close to being pushed to their abilties. It's disgusting to watch the talent and the mediocre coaching. This team should be blowing the below average teams in their division out of the gym, but this coach is rather content with the 5 point wins and not to mention, losses that should never happen. Good luck ever getting beyond the 1st round! These girls deserve more than what's getting dished out.

FYI - Maddy Sulka is only a freshman
