The Mountain Pointe Pride softball team had an early exit from the state playoffs, after being dealt a 7-4 loss at home by the 21st seeded North Canyon Rattlers on Saturday in the first round of the Division I state tournament.

Early on, it looked as if the Pride’s Kristen McCann was going to cruise to a victory, allowing only one hit and two base runners in three innings of work.

Mountain Pointe, the 12th seed, drew first blood in the third inning when senior Jenna Huerta cracked a double up the middle, bringing in sophomore Ana Howard.

But the lead wouldn’t last.

McCann stepped into the circle for the top of the fourth and surrendered three consecutive singles, loading the bases with no outs. The junior right-hander got North Canyon junior Brianna Moeller out at home on a fielder’s choice, and then struck out Olisha Navartil on four pitches.

Almost out of the jam, McCann jumped to a 0-1 count on Rattler sophomore Rachel D’Agostino, before D’Agostino ripped a single to the outfield, driving in the tying run.

The Pride (15-16) couldn’t answer in the bottom of the fourth, stranding a runner on second.

In the top of the fifth, North Canyon (10-12) capitalized on their momentum from the previous inning. Rattler starting pitcher and senior Bianca Boling jacked a four-bagger over the center field wall for 2-1 lead.

McCann appeared to bounce back, striking out the next two batters. But she got into trouble again, walking freshman Celina Carrasco on five pitches and allowing her to advance to third on a throwing error during the next play. North Canyon junior Alex Pasternak brought Carrasco home on a single.

The Pride, who played without offensive star Hannah Hoban because she was taking the SAT, refused to give up and things looked good for them in the bottom of the fifth.

After forcing the count full, McCann reached on an infield single, which brought Jenna Huerta back to the plate.

Alyssa Gomez came in to substitute run for McCann, but was called out after being hit by Huerta’s chopper to second. She was able to steal second and advance to third on junior Xiomara Brown-Scott’s single. Threatening to score, Boling was able to get senior Brenna Cundary to pop out to third after a seven-pitch at bat, ending the inning.

McCann looked to be back in control in the sixth, getting the first two Rattlers to ground out. But she got in trouble again after walking Boling and giving up a single. A single from Moeller brought Boling home, and gave North Canyon a 4-1 lead.

The seventh brought more trouble for McCann. A walk, a single, and a batter hit by a pitch loaded the bases for Boling , who seized the opportunity as she skied the ball to center for a two-out three-run double and a 7-1 lead.

In their last at-bat the Pride fought valiantly. Cundary hit a two-run double to right with the bases loaded. A grounder to first brought in another run, and Mountain Pointe was right back in the game, with Cundary now on third. But sophomore Jaylah McIntosh grounded to second, and Mountain Pointe’s season came to a halt.

North Canyon advances to face No. 5 Hamilton on Tuesday.

The Desert Vista softball team beat No. 16 Highland 4-1 on the road Saturday in the first round of the Division I state tournament.

The 16th-seeded Thunder (12-13)  travel to No. 1 Gilbert (24-7) on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
