All it took was a momentum swing and Phoenix Brophy Prep rode the pendulum to a 47-24 Fiesta Region victory over Phoenix Desert Vista Friday night.
The Broncos and host Thunder kept in close through the third quarter, but when Brophy's Joe Maggi intercepted a Cody Sokol pass at the end of the third quarter and then jumped in a Desert Vista fumble in the fourth the scales were tipped.

It changed the momentum and that was the difference.”
Brophy running back Max Leonesio helped to shift the game in the Bronco’s favor too.
Leonesio carried 23 times for 229 yards and four touchdowns.
They weren’t the spectacular, game-breaker variety. His longest was for 33 yards. The others were for 4, 19, and 7 yards and the last one game Brophy a 40-24 lead with a little more than 10 minutes remaining in the game.
After the Broncos settled for a 39-yard field goal by Alex Garoutte, Desert Vista’s Michael Ingrassia had the Homecoming crowd on it’s feet with a school-record 99-yard kickoff return that gave the Thunder a 6-3 lead four minutes into the game.
Eric Hernandez helped the Thunder stretch that lead to 9-3 with a 27-yard field goal but the Broncos responded on a 24-yard touchdown run by Andrew Lundahl. Desert Vista blocked the conversion kick and Anders Battle regained the lead again on a 3-yard blast.
Leonesio got the Broncos even at 16-all with his 33-yard touchdown run and Garoutte gave Brophy a 19-16 halftime edge on a 30-yard field goal.
Leonesio’s two third quarter touchdowns opened thing up for the Broncos until Desert Vista quarterback Cody Sokol hit Ryne Rezac on a touchdown pass, then tacked on two more points with a conversion pass to Anthony Kereluk.
Desert Vista recovered an on-side kick and looked poised to turn that into another touchdown, but that's when Brophy’s Maggi intercepted Sokol on the goal line and returned it 47 yards near the end fo the third.
The Thunder never recovered from that one.
Desert Vista lost one fumble and was intercepted three times. Brophy lost three fumbles.
“We got turnovers when we really needed them,” Brophy coach Scooter Molander said. “Obviously we had some too. Desert Vista is a very athletic and their quarterback is very good. You make a mistake and he’ll make you pay.”
