Generally speaking the Ahwatukee Cup is very competitive across every sport.

One of the exceptions is wrestling and it continued Wednesday night as Desert Vista plastered Mountain Pointe 65-9.

The Thunder has dominated this matchup since 1998 and it continued this year as they won 10 of the 12 matches competed, including seven by pins and two by major decision.

"I told the seniors before the match that this was their last time to face their cross-town rival and they needed to keep (the dominance) rolling," Desert Vista coach David Gonzalez said. "We made them the four captains and they all did what they were supposed to do."

Senior state-placer Ace Martinez started with a quick 58 second pin over Garrett Gaughan at 160 and Sam Schoepf followed it up with a 5-1 over Nick Olguin on the strength of two takedowns at 171.

"It was a good feeling," Schoepf said. "Ace and I wanted to set the tempo and get it going in our way."

The other two senior captains on the night were Tyler Struck, who pinned Blake Gaughan in 3:59, at 119 and Dylan Kearney, who secured two third-period takedowns for a 9-1 major decision over Patrick Murphy, at 145.

"I am glad they got their last win against Mountain Pointe," Gonzalez said. "It's a stepping stone for next week when the competition gets tougher and we have to be ready."

Desert Vista (2-0) got pins from Matt Mathers (103), Jacob Woebel (125), Robbie Mathers (130), Kendall Love (140) and Alex Bambic (HVY). Cooper Gardner (135) and Sergio Alvarez (215) picked up forfeits, while Jimi Dixie (189) had a major decision.

Mountain Pointe sophomore Cody Rojas was impressive at 112 with a pin in 3:10 after using a cradle to build an early lead. The Pride, which competed without head coach Shannon Radford because of a family emergency, won the last match of the night as Robert Link (152) used three defensive takedowns to beat Danny Mitchell, 13-7.

Rojas was one match away from placing at state last season and doesn't plan on letting that happen again.

"I am working hard in the room and I just have to get better each day," he said. "No matter what the team is doing I have to stay focused on what I need to do to win my match."
