Mae Maiefski and Anastasia Pushkarenko of Mountain Pointe girls tennis are several local athletes still alive in the Division I state tournament.

The combo won two close matches on Friday – 6-4, 6-4 and 7-6, 6-2 – to advance to Saturday’s third round where the seniors will face the fourth-seeded doubles team of Nicole Whinery

and Maeve McGeorge of Salpointe Catholic.

Other survivors of the first two rounds were Desert Vista’s Melissa Khan in singles and Yolena Carlon and Tori Kammerzell of Desert Vista in doubles.

Kahn won her two matches handily – 6-0, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-0 – to make third round action on Saturday. The eighth-seeded Kahn will face Desert Mountain’s Kristie Lee.

Carlon and Kammerzell won two matches to advance to the third round where they will face the Xavier tandem of Margaret Cohen and Scarlet Rush, the top-seeded combo.

Mountain Pointe’s Carla Poplawski made it to the second round before being eliminated, while the Pride’s ViAnn Pham was knocked out in a close match – 7-5, 6-4 in the first round.

The Thunder’s Kristen Sperry lost in the first round.

The area boys were unable to get anyone into the second day of action.

In doubles action, Mohammed and Yusef Saleem lost in the second round as did Mountain Pointe’s David Battock and Jonah Matanky.

In singles action, Desert Vista’s Andy Cook and the Pride’s Monty Roth lost in the second round.
