The toughest wrestling tournament in Arizona kept up its reputation with several high seeds falling by the wayside on the first day of action.

Chandler’s Estevan Ulibarri got a 15-2 major decision over top-seeded Chris Quiroz of Tucson at 138. Only one of the top four seeds – No. 2 Chase Meade of Marana – made the semis at 138.

The second seed struggled as the first four weight classes saw the second seed get dropped to the consolation before the semifinals.

Second-seeded Brandon Courtney of Desert Edge forfeited in the second round after earning a technical fall in the first to open the bottom half of the 106-lb bracket.

Second-seeded Alexander Calderon of Maryvale was beat 7-5 in the quarterfinals by Alexander Juarez of Cibola at 113.

Cibola and Sunnyside lead the way with six semifinalists each, but Mesa Mountain leads in the team race with 123 points and five semifinalists.

Sunnyside is in second with 117 points and Corona del Sol, wrestling without state champion Glenn Farina, is third with 108 points and five semifinalists.

Cibola (96 points) and Ironwood Ridge (85.5) round out the top five.

Chandler (85) has four semifinalists as does Desert Vista with the Thunder sitting in eighth place 84 points.

Advancing for the Thunder were Alex Carrillo (113), Nico Campbell (138), Tristan Ezell (220) and Adam Ortega (HVY).
