Tempe Corona del Sol, the Cinderella team of the girls 5A-I soccer tournament, has a ticket to the big dance. The Aztecs, the next to last seed in the 16-team state tournament, beat sixth-seeded Desert Vista, 6-5, in overtime penalty kicks Thursday night at Gilbert Campo Verde High School and will face top-seeded Phoenix Xavier in the finals on Saturday afternoon.Corona goalkeeper Hailey Hayes rejected the Thunder’s sixth shot of the shoot-out after Heather Crothers got the game-winner a few moments earlier. The Aztecs and Thunder went through 100 scoreless minutes, including two overtimes, before Hayes made her final save of the night.Hayes also turned away a Desert Vista shot six minutes into the game and finished with 10 saves overall."You don’t like to have a game like this come down to penalty kicks," Corona coach Matt Smith said. "You don’t feel like you’ve really won. You’d rather win in regulation, but we were underdogs all along and now here we are."Hayes isn’t a big fan of penalty kicks either."I really don’t like them," Hayes said, "but the last one in overtime was bigger than the one in the first half."Both teams had opportunities to avoid the overtime.Desert Vista’s best shot was saved by Hayes in the first half and Corona had two shots early in the second half that looked like they were headed for the back of the net.The Aztecs also had a shot hit the crossbar and bounce out in the final minute of the second overtime."These are both championship programs," Smith added, "So you’re going to get games like this no matter the seeding. Hannah (Fadenrecht, Desert Vista’s goalie) made some great saves too."Desert Vista coach Paul Magoogian felt that Corona was better than a 15th seeded team."That’s just seeding," Manoogian said. "They’re a much better team than that."Xavier, the defending state champion, made it to the finals again with a goal in the final 16 seconds to beat Gilbert Highland, 2-1.
