Up until a couple of years ago Jon Mora was all about soccer.

But things started to change when he realized he was pretty good at kicking a football too.

Now Mountain Pointe football coach Norris Vaughan calls the senior place kicker the best kicker he has coached in over 20 years.

“He’s a weapon, Vaughan said. “And he kicks the ball so high we have a chance to cover it.”

Mora started his athletic career on a soccer field when he was five and decided to give kicking a football a try as a freshman.

“When I was a sophomore I started to take it seriously,” said Mora, who has also been a defender on the Pride soccer team.

That’s when he linked up with former University of Arizona and National Football league kicker Max Zendejas.

“He basically showed me everything and made me a kicker,” said Mora, who feels he has a better opportunity to continue his career in college in football rather than soccer.

Until this season Mora’s expertise has been kick offs, extra points and field goals, but he didn’t want to have any part of punting.

“I tried punting, but just could get it,” he said. “Then Max showed me how to do it and then I got the idea.”

By being an all-around kicker for the Pride, Mora frees up tight end Ben DeMarr, who handled most of the punting last season, to concentrate on his primary position.

Kevin Kadisak, a junior and goal keeper on the Pride soccer team is the backup punter this season.

Mora put five Pride kick offs into the end zone against Gilbert Highland last week. In the opening two games of the season has made 14 extra point conversions and a field goal for 17 points in two games.
