Trey Ronayne knows the challenges are going to be few and far between.

It’s why he doesn’t let up.

“I have to work hard no matter who it is I am wrestling,” the Basha senior 170-pounder said Tuesday night. “I can’t let up just because the competition isn’t what I like. I just go do my thing.”

That thing has him undefeated in Arizona this year after winning state last year. His lone defeat came in the semifinals at Reno Tournament of Champions when he lost 9-4 to Maple Mountain’s Kimbrell Bastian, who is ranked in the top five nationally.

“I wanted to wrestle him and I enjoyed it,” Ronayne said. “I’m going to (Grand Canyon) and he’s going to (Utah Valley) so I’ll see him a lot over the years and I can’t wait to see him again. I could have won it if I wrestled smarter.”

Ronayne didn’t have such problems in Tuesday’s dual meet at Mountain Pointe where he pinned the Pride’s Austin Reyar, who came in at 14-1, in 5 minutes and 2 seconds after getting three takedowns before using a bear hug to Reyar’s back for the fall.

Basha had five other pins and lost only one match on the night despite wrestling without senior state runner-up Kamden Krum, who will be out until sectionals after getting injured shortly after finishing seventh in Reno.

The Pride’s lone winner was Michael Waites, who had three takedowns and three 3-point pinning combinations in a 15-3 win over Josh Martin.

“We have (a total of) nine freshmen and sophomores in the lineup,” Pride co-coach Darrick Kahle. “We are going to take our lumps but these guys are competing. We are working hard and we will get better with tough matches like this.”
