For the second season in a row, the Desert Vista girls basketball team took on the very best the state - if not the nation - has to offer.

It didn't end well either time.

There is no shame in losing to a nationally-ranked St. Mary's squad, but the Thunder were in trouble from the start in a 80-34 loss Friday in the second round of the Division I state playoffs.

The Knights (26-1) led 14-1 early and 31-10 after the first quarter as they made six 3-pointers.

St. Mary's, which beat DV in the state quarterfinals last season on the way to the state title, pushed it to 70-25 after three quarters.

Thunder junior Emily Wolph entered the game needing two points, unofficially, for 1,000 points in her career and she did have a a basket in the game.

The Thunder ended a tumultuous season at 18-11 after having their first-year coach Jaysie Chambers-Sheppard fired midseason for various reasons.

The team played through the adversity and some injuries as J'Ontar Coleman coached the last 10 games, posting a 6-4 record.
