On June 22, Ahwatukee Foothills resident Lindsey Schnell was running the 800-meter in the Olympic Trials, when something unexpected happened. Schnell came into contact with another runner, Ajee Wilson, from New Jersey. Schnell did not fall, but still lost a lot of ground.

“I was in second place at 500 meters feeling great and got tripped and pushed from behind and it sent me to lane three or four,” Schnell said. “By the time I got my footing the pack was 30 to 40 meters ahead. I ran as I hard as I could for the last 300 meters, it was not good enough to advance me to the next round.”

Schnell ended up taking seventh in her heat and 26th place out of the whole women’s section with a time of 2:06:50 in the preliminary. Only the first three in the heat moved on to the next round (these were Alice Schmidt, Ajee Wilson, and Katie Palmer). Schnell did not advance to the semifinals and will not be participating in the Olympics this year.

“The Olympic Trials were going to be my last race of the season, but I cannot end on that note,” said Schnell. “I am running in Toronto, Canada, on July 11 where I will race against an outstanding international field. Hopefully, this will go better and I can end my season on a positive note.”

Schnell is disappointed by the results of the race, but will continue on in her running career all the same.
