The Mountain Pointe Pride baseball team, which started the season ranked 20th in the nation, lost 4-3 and was eliminated from the state playoffs by the 22nd seeded Gilbert Tigers at home on Tuesday in the second round of the Division I state tournament.

Back to back two-run innings for the Tigers spelled doom for the Pride, who left 11 runners stranded in the game.

Mountain Pointe head coach Brandon Buck said his team played solid defensively but couldn’t capitalize when they needed too.

“We had some guys on early in the first and third innings and we didn’t take advantage of it,” Buck said.

In the third, the Pride loaded the bases with two outs on an intentional walk to Taylor Martin and got out of the inning with a grounder to first.

Beyond that, the Pride (16-10) were not afforded many opportunities. The Tigers’ starting pitcher Alex Goodman went 6 2/3 and struck out six.

Matt Gutierrez, the head coach of the Tigers (17-13), said it was one of his pitcher’s best outings.

“He wanted the ball today, we gave it too him and he stepped up big time. He gave up three hits against a really good Mountain Pointe team,” Gutierrez said.

Gilbert's Matt Keppler had a two-run double in the fifth inning, while Chris Smith had an RBI double in the sixth.

While it was all smiles on the Gilbert bus, the Mountain Pointe players stayed on the field, their heads hung. It was the last time many of them would play together.

The Pride's Jorge Carrazco took the loss after allowing four earned runs in 5 plus innings, while only Cole Tucker, Christian Bitar and Logan managed to get hits, all singles.

“We graduate 16 guys. This is a very, very special group. You don’t normally see 16 boys come on to a baseball team. They’re going to be missed but they’ve left a great legacy,” Buck said.

The Pride tried to comeback in the seventh but only managed one run and stranded the tying run on third. The game ended on a three-pitch strike out.

The Tigers will go on to face No. 3 Horizon at Maryvale Stadium on Thursday in the Elite Eight.
