The Desert Vista cross country team competed in the Nike Southwest Regional meet last weekend in hopes of qualifying for the national meet in Portland, Ore.

Both squads came up short.

The girls team finished 13th in the team race as Jenna Maack finished 28th overall with a time of 18:37.07.

The boys team finished 18th in the team race as junior Carter Macey finished the best with a time of 15:51.47 to finish 23rd overall.

The event was at Toka Sticks Golf Course in Gilbert with teams and individuals from the surrounding states in attendance.

The state won’t go without representation at the national meet as Xavier qualified as a team for the girls race and Chinle’s Rolando Jumbo qualified as an individual.

Bright off to good start

Desert Vista graduate Patricia Bright started her career at Oregon State with a 23-point effort, along with eight rebounds and four blocked shots against Cal State Northridge.

The junior transfer from Pensacola State College is averaging 11.3 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.0 blocked shots through four games.
