Dillan Johnson was at it again Friday night.

The Mountain Pointe running back finished with nearly 200 all-purpose yards while scoring touchdowns three different ways en route to a 49-3 Mountain Pointe victory over Skyline Friday night in a Class 5A-Division I East Valley Region Game.

By the time the first half was over Friday, Johnson had rushed for more than 50 yards and also added a 52-yard punt return touchdown with 9:50 remaining in the second quarter, giving Mountain Pointe (5-1, 2-0) the 21-0 advantage.

But Johnson wasn’t done there. He opened the second half with an 80-yard kickoff return touchdown for his third different touchdown of the night.

“It really is all blocking. I just did my job and ran through the holes,” said Johnson, who a week earlier ran for 170 yards and two touchdowns, while also scoring on a 56-yard punt return – all in the first half.

“That’s a good team right there. They controlled us and they deserved to win,” said Skyline coach Peter Jonovich.

Skyline, still winless on the season at 0-6 overall, will play its second region game next week at Desert Ridge.

The Pride scored first on a 5-yard first-quarter run by Johnson and never looked back.  The duo of Johnson and fellow running back Issac Kartz was too much for the out-matched Coyote defense, leading the Pride to 213 yards on the ground. Mountain Pointe quarterback Kyle Faunce was effective when needed, completing 6 of 8 passes for 121 yards and a touchdown.

Mountain Pointe was aided early by a Skyline turnover – the only turnover of the game –  at the end of the first quarter.  The Pride’s Brandon Trotter recovered a fumble by Skyline’s Christian Strobel late in the first quarter in Coyote territory.  The very next play Faunce threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Garrett Holle for a 14-0 lead.

Skyline scored its only points in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter, when kicker Brandon Whitney booted a 50-yard field goal through the uprights.  The scoring opportunities were few and far between for the Coyotes, with three field goal attempts being the best offensive chances Skyline could muster all night.

As for Mountain Pointe, head coach Norris Vaughan is well aware of what the team’s schedule brings here on out.

“Our last four games are all against people that, I’d say they’re all toss-ups,” Vaughan said.

All games remaining for the Pride are region games, with match-ups versus Desert Ridge, Westwood, Perry, and Marcos De Niza on tap.

The Pride have a bye next week, leaving them with plenty of time to gear up for the final region games.

“We have two weeks to prepare, and I think we will prepare good. We will be ready for Desert Ridge,” Johnson said.
