One was the steadying influence on a senior-laden team making its last push and the other is the star on a team with designs on even bigger things next season.

Either way it is broken down, Mountain Pointe's Tylor Wimbish and Desert Vista's Danny Powell had fantastic seasons.

It led to both players being named to the All-Tribune Second Team.

Wimbish, a 6-foot-7, 200-pound post player, helped the Pride (22-6) to their second straight East Valley Region title and to the Class 5A Division I state quarterfinals before losing to Mesa.

He averaged 18.2 points, 7.7 rebounds 2.0 assists while shooting 56 percent from the field and 75 percent at the free-throw line.

"We all had a good season, but I thought we had that last one," Wimbish said about the 72-66 loss to Mesa. "Other than that I achieved what I wanted to."

Wimbish should end up playing in college next season. He has received interest from Division II schools Hawaii Pacific and Notre Dame de Namur (Belmont, Calif.). If those offers do not come through then any of the in-state junior colleges, along with Fresno City Junior College are a possibility.

Powell made a huge impact in his first year in the Thunder program after transferring from Mesa as he helped Desert Vista win more games this season (21-10) than the previous two years (19) combined.

The 6-5, 200-pound small forward averaged 19.2 points, 10.1 rebounds while shooting 53 percent from the field, 46 percent (46 of 101) from 3-point and 85 percent from the line.

"He came in early and showed that he could be a star," Desert Vista coach David Williams said during the season. "He progressed throughout the year and by this time next year, if he keeps working, he could be something special."

The Thunder bring most of the roster from this year's team that made it to the state quarterfinals back in an attempt to make it to the next level.

"We feel like we can do some good things and Danny is a big part of that," Williams said.
