The visit might have been unofficial but Dylan Fischer’s verbal commitment was very real.

The Desert Vista senior two-way linemen will continue his career at Navy next year after making the phone call on Sunday.

“It’s great to get the decision over with and now I can focus on the playoffs,” he said Wednesday. “I wanted to be able play without having that hanging over my head.”

Fischer, who drew some interest from Air Force and Brown, but had no other offers, was unsure if he’d be able to continue his track career as well.

“I haven’t figured that out yet,” he said.

Wakeup call

The Mountain Pointe loss to Brophy showed the team that if it doesn’t play four quarter bad things can happen.

“We definitely came together more after that and realized wins aren’t just given to us,” junior Jalen Brown said. “The Corona (del Sol win) we gave up too many points (35), too. It showed us we just go out there and play. We have to work hard all week leading up to it.”

Legging it out

Desert Vista junior Garrison Schwartz took over the place kicking duties from senior Ian Pletenik with three games remaining in the regular season.

“It’s like any other position and we have to go with the guy who is most productive,” Thunder coach Dan Hinds said.

Schwartz has 12 touchbacks in 22 kickoffs and made only field goal attempt.

Wait and see

As of Thursday night, Hinds did not know the results of the MRI senior lineman Zach Tamburo had taken on his injured Achilles’ heel.

Also, there were some internet postings about the availability of leading rusher Jarek Hilgers early in the week but Hinds said he has healthy heading into Wednesday’s practice.
