The debut of the Desert Vista wrestling lineup had to wait, but the victories did not in the season opening tri-meet.
The Thunder was without five of its top wrestlers but still managed to defeat Mountain Ridge 62-12 and Mountain Pointe 63-13 on Tuesday.
"It's good to have that kind of depth," Desert Vista coach David Gonzalez said. "We put some young wrestlers out there and they performed well. It's what the first match of the season is about - getting mat time."
Desert Vista held out sophomore Matthew Mathers (113) because of an injury, senior Robbie Mathers (132) because he wrestled in the Boarder Wars exhibition on Monday, senior Kendal Love (126) was back in Indiana because of a death in the family and senior heavyweight Mike Arredondo is still playing football.
Derek Allen was held out because he hasn't officially been cleared after transferring from Mountain Ridge.
It was a cautionary move as the athletic department doubles checks a few things before putting him on the mat and risk putting an ineligible wrestler in competition.
The Thunder's other import - Robert Sobarzo, who transferred from Avondale Westview because one of his parents took a job on the eastside - looked as he a 21-5 technical fall and pin at 138.
The former state placer said the transition gone well.
"The room has a good pace to it and it is competitive," Sobarzo said. "It is only going to make us all better."
One of the better matches of the night came at 160 between Mountain Pointe's Pat Murphy and Desert Vista's Danny Mitchell.
Mitchell led 5-4 after two periods but Murphy got a reversal right off the third period whistle and he kept his 6-5 lead.
Mitchell got an escape with five seconds left, but Murphy never hesitated on quick shot and scored the match-winner at the buzzer.
Mountain Pointe defeated Mountain Ridge 42-25 to start the night.
"We did some good things, especially in the lower weights," Pride coach Shannon Radford said. "We can a lot of what we learned what we did wrong and take it back to the practice room and work on it."
