As Melissa Kahn’s tennis career plays out the next three years at Desert Vista, there will always be a lingering question.

What if she didn’t get sick her freshman season?

Khan is expected to develop into one of the state’s top individuals over the next few years after already putting on an impressive display this spring.

She lost just one match in regular season action and that was to eventual state champion Courtney Amos of Salpointe Catholic.

While Kahn continues to improve over the summer playing in sectional and national tournaments, there will always be the void of what might have been if it were not for the flu bug that caused her to pull out of the individual state tournament.

“Her future is bright,” Desert Vista coach Angel Singer said. “I do believe with continued training with her pro and with us at Desert Vista she can be a state champion by her junior year.

“She has the focus and skill to make it happen.”

Despite missing out at state, Kahn was named second team All-Tribune as several area coaches singled her out as one of the state’s best.

Others receiving attention from the area were Thunder honorable mention picks Jennifer Kahn, Tori Kammerzell and Carolyn Rath.

Kammerzell filled in for Melissa Kahn at the singles state tournament and advanced to the third round before losing.

Rath and Jennifer Kahn advanced to the third round of doubles before being knocked out.

For Mountain Pointe, the doubles team of Viann Pham and Carla Poplawsky were honorable mention picks after the freshmen made the second round of state.

On the boys side of things, the Pride’s double team of David Pattock and Jonah Matanky were honorable mention picks along with Desert Vista singles player Mohammad Saleem, who advanced to the third round.
