There are a couple of education titles attached to Jeff Decker’s name, but author isn’t one of them.

At least not until this spring.

Decker is an advanced physical education instructor and strength and conditioning coach at Mountain Pointe High School.

He is also an assistant football coach on the staff of Norris Vaughan, who took the Pride to a 12-1 season and semifinal appearance in the state championship last season.

Decker and Tim McClennan, the director of performance enhancement for the Makeplays.com website, strength and conditioning coach at Arizona State University for 13 years and a published author, had an article published in the April issue of the National Training and Conditioning magazine.

They had operated a strength and conditioning camp at Mountain Pointe last summer and decided to write an article for the publication.

“It was kind of neat,” Decker said. “We decided to write something, send it on and they loved it.”

But, like most publications, there were some editors they had work with on the project, too.

“They said, ‘Can you talk a little more about this or that,’ and we went back and forth, so it took a while to get it all together, but it turned out pretty well, and we’ve been getting some compliments about it,” Decker said.

The camp, which will continue at Mountain Pointe this summer, covers almost every sport on campus and each individual was on a specifically designed program.

“It kind of surprised me, but I’ve been getting e-mails from people I don’t know from all over the country wanting to get more information about how we run our camp,” Decker said. “They want to know how to do this or that and how to design a day.”

It may not be Time or People magazine, but the publication that comes out every two months does have a loyal following.

“I read every issue because I try to keep up with the latest techniques and philosophies,” Decker said.

The magazine is usually found on the desks of personal trainers, school athletic directors, strength and conditioning trainers, athletic trainers and physical therapists.

Decker and McClennan wrote about laying the groundwork for the camp, including brainstorming with Pride coaching staffs, encouraging them to talk to their athletes.

They also outlined their seven objectives of the camp.

The duo also consulted with Pride team physician, Dr. Roger McCoy, who has also worked with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Arizona State University.

Decker and McClennan also put a plug in the magazine about the success of the Mountain Pointe sports programs.

“Tim had already written a book called, Inner Strength, Inner Peace,” Decker said, “but this was all kind of new to me. I’d written a couple of papers, but nothing like this. It was a lot of work, but it was kind of fun, too, and I’d do it again.”
