Mountain Pointe will get a chance to defend its state badminton title and go for its ninth state championship overall.
The third-seeded Pride swept No. 2 Mountain Ridge 5-0 on Wednesday at Sunnyslope High in the state semifinals.
Mountain Pointe will take on No. 1 Xavier for the championship at 6 p.m. at Sunnyslope on Thursday.
The two teams meet the last week of the regular season and the Gators won 6-3.
The Pride have won eight state titles since 1997.
In girls golf, two Pride players are out of the individual title race but they are gaining valuable experience for next season.
Junior Lauren Blumears is tied for 23 at 8-over par and junior Madi Woodward is tied for 41st at 15-over par after the first day of action of the Division I state tournament at Aguila Golf Course in Laveen.
Blumears tees off Thursday for the final round at 9:20 a.m. and Woodward at 9:10 a.m.
The individual leaders are two players from Pinnacle as Gabby Bautista and Hanna Atkins are both 1-under, while Xavier defending champion Hannah O’Sullivan is one of the six players within two shots at 1-over.
Pinnacle leads Xavier by two shots, 7-over 295 to 9-over 297, in the team race with Gilbert rounding out the top three at 320.
