Desert Vista is going to go even deeper on Saturday.
The Thunder boys basketball team traveled to Tucson on Wednesday and knocked off No. 8 Tucson Salpointe Catholic 53-49 in the first round of the Class 5A Division I state tournament.
Salpointe ends the year at 22-7.
With the win, No. 9 Desert Vista (21-8) goes back on the road, heading to Sierra Vista near Nogales, to take on top-seeded Buena on Saturday.
Buena (24-4) beat No. 16 Yuma Kofa 57-52 in the first round.
