Spring cleaning is almost here and it's time to clear out the old clothing from hubby's side of the closet and the kid's rooms. It's surprising all the items in those closets that can be turned into cold cash. Turn Style accepts women's, men's, boys' and girls' clothing, along with home goods. If you think about it, you can basically "exchange" your old items for something new; at least new to you, for absolutely nothing! The store offers two options for items that are sold, either a 55 percent store credit or 45 percent cash back in the form of a check. Either way, you can't lose. You will be surprised at the selection of designer brands and the unique boutique-looking apparel that is in stock.

We could not overlook the good ole' Dollar Tree. Everything is a buck. Major brands are more evident than ever at this store. According to the manager, they are stocking more name-brand items every day, such as Hefty Ziplocs, Reynolds Wrap, Butler toothbrushes and Colgate and Aqua Fresh toothpaste. A very nifty choice of bath and body lotion products was displayed that rivaled major retailers at the mall. Don't forget, this is a perfect place for party goods like wrapping paper, plates, cups, gift bags, tape and goody bag items.

The name of the business alone is compelling, but the concept is even more unique and the products sold are a great value. Monthly specials are available at the store and also can be found on their Web site, where a few seasonal quilting kits were discounted by 25 percent. They even offer "Free to Use" patterns online to allow everyone a chance to be creative. Three Dudes Quilting offers a coordinated fat quarter consisting of five quarter squares for only $12.95.

We all love our animals but they can be an expensive investment. What with feeding, vet bills, training and grooming, one could go broke. Rather than sending Fido to the groomers for a spa treatment that costs more than most women are willing to pay for a decent facial themselves, check out Pawz Spa. They offer a "Wash & Dry" that is about half the cost of a standard grooming. The charge for a Labrador is only $25 rather than the regular $48. The regular grooming price is still a great value, but when money is tight the Wash & Dry is a great alternative. Smaller dogs can enjoy the Wash & Dry for as low as $15.

Prickly Pear4025 E. Chandler Blvd.(480) 236-8831

Tucked away in the Trader Joe's shopping center is Prickly Pear, a unique boutique filled with furnishings, jewelry, home accessories, lamps, gifts and wall hangings. It's easy to pick out a unique hostess gift for under $20. If you have never had the experience of shopping at Prickly Pear, then you are lucky since your first purchase is always 40 percent off. Along with furnishings and accessories, the owner also offers affordable professional painting services in your home. The charge is only $5 to $10 per square foot with paint included. A typical bathroom will run only $199.

Dina Riggo4031 E. Fawn Drive(602) 326-0666, (480) 431-1109

Are your pants too long? Dina can shorten them for $6. Is your skirt too big? Dina can take it in for $6. Bust out your zipper? Dina can fix it for ... you guessed it ... $6. Dina's $6 price list makes it that much better. Now for a very reasonable price splurge on the clearance rack and still stay in budget, one can enjoy professionally tailored clothing for a very affordable price. Dina has 25 years experience as a seamstress and loves sewing. It shows in her work and her concern for her customers' satisfaction. Dina is also very talented at sewing bridesmaid's dresses and other formal wear. Dina's prices to make a new garment starts at $25. She is available every weekday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., for alterations.

Here are some tricks to capitalize on Goodwill's already phenomenal prices: every day items tagged with a specific color and number are half price. Tuesdays seniors receive a 25 percent discount, Thursday's items of a specific color and number are $1, and every other Saturday (including Feb. 28) the entire store is 50 percent off. Those who donate are also able to receive 20 percent off a purchase of $10 or more. Check out Emily Behrendt's "Goodwill Hunting" blog at ahwatukee.com for weekly finds.
